Fawn Hidden in Kansas Winter Grass in beside a tidal inlet in Kansas

Fawn Hidden in Kansas Winter Grass

by Thelma Garrison

Tall, pale beige stalks of dried meadow grass dominate the foreground, partially obscuring a young deer fawn resting near a muddy tidal inlet. The flat, white glare of noon reflects off the still water, creating a harsh, diffuse light that washes out deep shadows. The sky above is a uniform sheet of heavy gray clouds, pressing down on the flat Kansas landscape. The fawn's spotted coat blends seamlessly with the bleached vegetation, its small ears perked slightly above the stalks. Mud slicks the banks where the water meets the land, against the dry, brittle texture of the surrounding grass. One shadow falls across the wet earth near the water's edge.
