Dripping Towel in Lima

by Stella Nava

A narrow alleyway in Lima’s historic center is swallowed by thick, gray mist at dawn, diffusing the weak ambient light into a soft, even glow. On a low concrete ledge, a chipped enamel pot sits beside a rusted iron coat stand, its hooks empty but catching the damp air. Steam rises in thin, erratic wisps from a small saucepan on a portable burner, merging with the fog and obscuring the details of the street beyond. One hand towel, faded blue and worn at the edges, hangs over the edge of the ledge, dripping condensation onto the wet cobblestones below.
