Flat noon light bleaches the facade of a corner bakery in Lima, revealing the cracked texture of peeling turquoise paint that has flaked away to expose layers of older gray stucco. A shopkeeper leans against the doorframe, wiping sweat from his brow with a striped towel draped over his shoulder, while inside the cool shadow of the entrance, stacks of wool scarves in deep reds and browns sit beside a row of polished tea kettles catching the harsh glare. Outside, a rolling pin rests on a wooden crate next to a paper fan used to stir the air, surrounded by the dust of the street.
