Preserved Lemons in Beirut

Sunlight strikes the peeling white stucco of a Rashaya-style facade, illuminating a cluster of vibrant red geraniums spilling from a chipped ceramic pot on a wrought-iron balcony. Below, the street level reveals a modest grocery stall where a shopkeeper in a faded linen shirt uses a heavy metal jar opener to pry the lid off a glass jar of preserved lemons, the action catching the harsh midday glare. Beside him, stacked metal canisters and a wooden ladder lean against the wall, their surfaces worn by years of use. The tactile friction of daily commerce, with the bright red blooms contrasting against the dusty gray pavement and the silver glint of the tool in motion.
