Delhi Child at Late Morning Light
by Axel Abbott
Bright late morning light floods the narrow aisle of a Chandni Chowk spice merchant, illuminating a chaotic yet organized stack of weathered cardboard boxes and brass tins. A young boy balances precariously on a wooden crate, reaching for a heavy sack of turmeric while his father, wrapped in a dusty white kurta, weighs goods on a hanging brass scale. The air shimmers with heat haze, softening the sharp edges of hanging dried chilies and piles of cumin seeds. Sunlight cuts through a nearby neem tree, casting dappled, intricate leaf shadows across the red-tiled floor and the boy’s bare feet. A faded blue sign in Hindi hangs crookedly above, fluttering in the stagnant air.
