A vendor in a faded blue kurta balances a heavy brass scale on a scarred wooden counter outside a spice shop in North Kolkata, the warm late afternoon sun slicing through the open shutter to illuminate clouds of red chili powder suspended in the air. Dried drips of turmeric and kumkum stain the white enamel basin beside a chipped porcelain jar used for weighing small portions. The vendor’s hand rests on a wooden lever, his expression focused as he negotiates with a customer whose bright yellow sari spills into the frame’s edge.
