Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a roadside stall in Jaipur’s Johari Bazaar buzzes with quiet industry. Brass artisans hammer thin sheets of metal, the rhythmic motion causing the hammered surfaces to catch faint, scattered highlights against the gray sky. A child in bright orange rain boots, incongruous yet practical for the damp street, stands on a wooden stool to reach the counter, holding a small brass file box. Nearby, a vendor wipes a cleaver with a cloth, the steel blade reflecting the dull light.
