Preparing Spices in Delhi

Sunlight slants through the dust of a narrow Chandni Chowk alley, catching the rough texture of a clay mortar and pestle resting on a worn wooden bench. A woman’s hands, stained with turmeric and henna, press a folded striped cotton sari into a terracotta bowl, the fabric’s bright saffron and indigo stripes contrasting sharply with the earthy red of the pottery. Behind her, a faded blue mailbox hangs crookedly on a peeling plaster wall, its metal surface dented and rusted. The warm late afternoon light casts long, sharp shadows across the cobblestones, highlighting the grit under fingernails and the smooth curve of the stoneware crocks nearby.
