Dawn plowed field tiny houses Belize

by Tonya Schwartz

Misty dawn light washes over terraced rice paddies in Belize, where dark furrows of plowed earth stretch horizontally across the frame. Tiny buildings, no larger than shoeboxes, line the immediate edges of the field, their miniature gables and windows rendered with sharp clarity against the soft green of the terraces. Above, a flock of crows lifts from the soil, their dark wings blurring slightly against a sky heavy with dramatic, rolling clouds. Telephone wires cut a thin, taut line across the upper third of the view, connecting the impossible structures to the distant horizon. The cool season air hangs still, visible only in the way the mist settles low in the hollows between the rice terraces. One shadow from the smallest house falls across a furrow of wet clay, at the base of the surreal scale in the texture of the earth.
