Quetzal Feathers Over Tiny Market Buildings

by Jerry Satterfield

Flat noon light flattens the sky above a surreal street where miniature shoebox-sized structures line both edges of the frame. These tiny buildings, detailed with miniature shutters and awnings, sit directly on the ground as if part of a real city. From a dark hole in the center, vibrant green and gold quetzal tail feathers trail downward, defying gravity and scale. The wind whips the long plumage into sharp, distinct strands against the clear, dry mountain backdrop. The turn of the season leaves the ground covered in dry, brittle leaves scattered between the tiny foundations. Shadows fall hard and short beneath the micro-architecture, at the base of the impossible scale in concrete reality. The feathers end abruptly, their tips brushing the dusty surface of a miniature stall roof.
