Dawn Ice Fishing Shanties in Stockholm Mist
by Debbie Vang
Thick white mist swallows the frozen expanse of Lake Mälaren, softening the edges of small wooden ice fishing shanties scattered across the gray ice. At first light of the polar night, a faint rim of cool blue light traces the upper corners of the structures, separating their dark forms from the surrounding fog. The ice surface appears rough and textured with frost patterns, stretching endlessly into the deep shadow where visibility fades. Several shanties stand in a loose row, their red and green painted wood weathered by the cold air. Tiny plumes of smoke drift upward from chimneys, barely visible before dissolving into the gray haze. The scene recedes in layers, each shanty becoming fainter until they merge with the mist. One chimney pipe catches the faintest glint of the rising sun against the dark wood.
