Dark Tidal Pools in South Carolina High Meadow

by Ruby Brooks

Bright tropical light floods a high meadow in South Carolina during early winter, illuminating dark, reflective tidal pools scattered across the grassy terrain. Sea spray hangs suspended in the air, catching the late afternoon sun as a fine, shimmering mist that softens the distant horizon. The pools appear almost black against the muted greens and browns of the dormant vegetation, their surfaces broken only by the rhythmic rise and fall of the tide. Strong weather fronts have passed, leaving the landscape washed clean and still. From above, the pools form irregular geometric shapes, some connected by shallow channels of water that glisten wetly. at the edge is a single blade of salt-tolerant grass bending low over the edge of a pool, its tip dripping a drop of clear water back into the dark surface.
