Crates and Flowers in Seoul Arcade Light

by Isla Hendricks

Geometric stacks of shipping crates align in a tight close-up, their wooden and metal surfaces defined by sharp tonal separation. Sunlight falls through sheer curtains, casting striped shadows that fall across the stacked boxes in the Mangwon arcade. From a hairline crack in the gray concrete floor beneath the crates, vibrant pink and white flowers erupt upward, defying the rigid industrial lines. The petals catch the soft afternoon glow, against the weathered textures of the crate corners. One stem bends against the edge of a wooden slat, its color vivid against the muted gray of the surrounding metal and wood. The scene remains still, the impossible growth anchored firmly in the monsoon-lit interior.
