Counter Activity in Lima

Pale morning light spills across a weathered zinc counter in a Miraflores breakfast stall, illuminating a row of chipped ceramic mugs waiting for the first rush. A vendor’s hand grips a heavy metal whisk, stirring a thick pot of hot chocolate while steam curls into the cool air. Behind the counter, a stainless steel sink reflects the gray sky, its surface damp and slick. A simple folding table nearby holds a stack of napkins and a plastic bottle of hot sauce, standing next to a ladder-back chair pulled out for a customer who hasn’t arrived yet.
