Cork Harvester Stripping Bark with Staircase in beside stacked hay bales in Bodrum

Cork Harvester Stripping Bark with Staircase

by Amara Cochran

Early spring light in Bodrum flattens the shadows as a cork harvester works beside stacked hay bales. The man wields an axe against the rough oak bark, his posture rigid under the noon glare. A surreal element disrupts the rural calm: a stone staircase rises from the ground and simultaneously descends into the earth from the same landing, defying gravity while maintaining rigid spatial logic. Low ground fog pools around the base of the hay bales and the stair supports, obscuring the foundation. The texture of the stripped cork contrasts with the dry grass and the smooth, impossible stone steps. Dust motes hang motionless in the flat air, caught between the upward and downward paths of the structure.
