Woodcutter with Sawdust Beard at Kafr el-Sheikh Landing
by Dawn Byers
Warm amber light from overhead string lamps illuminates the weathered features of a man standing near the riverbank in Kafr el-Sheikh. Fine particles of pale wood dust rest on the thick, dark hairs of his beard and mustache, catching the glow against his skin. The late summer air holds a low layer of ground fog that pools around his boots and the muddy edge of the landing, softening the transition between earth and water. City lights begin to flicker in the distant background, their cool blue tones against the intimate warmth of the string bulbs. His gaze is fixed forward with a quiet intensity, framed tightly so that the texture of his stubble and the suspended sawdust dominate the visual field. One grain of sawdust rests on the rim of his collar.
