Early morning sunlight breaks over the horizon, casting long shadows across the interior of a floodgate chamber in Durban. The scene is defined by high, curved concrete walls heavily stained with vertical streaks of green and brown algae, evidence of frequent water exposure. A shallow basin at the base of the structure holds still water, from which a thin layer of steam haze rises gently into the cool air.
