Climber Chalking Hands Under Corfu Limestone at Dawn
by Leo McCarthy
Silver winter light washes the rough, pale surface of an overhanging limestone wall near Corfu, where low-hanging monsoon clouds obscure the sky. A climber stands close to the rock face, hands raised, fingers dusted thick with white chalk powder. The stone texture is coarse and pitted, against the smooth, matte finish of the chalk on skin. Heavy, damp air rests on the scene, evidenced by the wet sheen on the rock and the soft gray mist swirling around the climber's lower body. The tight framing isolates the upper torso and the immediate rock overhang, showing the physical contact between the chalked hand and the stone. A fine spray of white powder drifts from the fingertips onto the dark, wet crevice of the limestone. The grip is firm, the muscles tense against the steep angle of the wall.
