Climber Heel Hooking on Overhang in Midnight Rain
by Aaron Walton
Deep shadows swallow the lower rock face while a sharp rim of light outlines the edge of a steep overhang near Amarah. A climber presses a heel against the stone, muscles tense, as steady rain creates a fine veil of white mist. Chalk dust drifts slowly downward, catching the faint illumination before vanishing into the gloom. The ground below disappears into darkness, suggesting a significant drop. Water beads on the rough, dry-season rock surface, darkening the texture. The climber's body angles sharply against gravity, legs locked in a rigid position. Raindrops streak across the stone, blurring the boundary between the wet surface and the falling chalk particles. one drop of water rests on the tip of a climbing shoe, trembling on the verge of falling.
