Chilean Military Trucks Dust Veil Airbase
by Jenny Cole
Soft afternoon light diffuses through heavy, slate-grey clouds hanging low over the arid Chilean steppe. A line of olive-drab military trucks moves along the cracked asphalt of a flight line, their heavy tires kicking up a thick, swirling veil of ochre dust that rests on the undercarriage. The ground is dry and cracked, scattered with sparse, grey-green shrubs typical of the cool season. Behind the vehicles, the flat horizon stretches endlessly under a dramatic sky where dark storm fronts gather. The trucks stand in disciplined formation, their metal surfaces dull against the bright, washed-out sky. Dust particles hang suspended in the air, catching the diffuse light near the rear wheels. One cloud shadow falls across the tarmac, darkening the path ahead of the lead vehicle.
