Military Convoy at Dawn Along Airbase Road

Deep shadow swallows the front of the armored trucks while a sharp rim of dawn light cuts across their steel edges. Dust hangs suspended in the cool air above the cracked tarmac of the airbase flight line near Polokwane. Late autumn leaves, brittle and brown, scatter across the road surface, caught in the wake of the paused vehicles. Canvas covers on the transport trucks show the texture of weathered fabric, stained by grime and dry earth. The concrete perimeter wall runs parallel to the convoy, its surface rough and pitted. One tire tread presses into the dust, leaving a dark, defined impression against the pale ground. The metal grilles of the vehicles reflect the faint, rising sky.
