Cherokee Stomp Dance Ceremony Under Night Sky
by Ruth O'Neill
Distant street lamps spill a cool, yellow glow across the floor of a ceremonial hall near Guelph, illuminating a central sacred fire. Around the flames, dancers in traditional regalia move in a tight, rhythmic circle, their moccasins kicking up faint dust in the clear air. The season turns, hinted at by the heavy wool shawls wrapped around the dancers' shoulders and the bare branches visible through the high windows. The composition is strictly symmetrical, with the fire anchoring the center and the dancers forming a perfect ring on either side. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the wooden planks, creating a pattern of dark and light that mirrors the steady beat of the drums. at the edge is the flicker of orange light reflecting in the polished eyes of a beaded moccasin at the edge of the frame.
