Ritual Fire Dance Night Kunming Concert Hall

Bright fluorescent tubes cast a harsh, even glow over the polished stage floor of a concert hall in Kunming. Performers in flowing dark costumes move in a circle, their hands holding small, flickering flames that dance against the rigid white light. Fine particles of dust float in the air, illuminated by the overhead fixtures, creating a hazy, textured layer above the dancers. The deep night outside is irrelevant; the interior is stark and functional. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the reflective floorboards. A trail of smoke curls slowly upward from a burning torch, caught in the beam of the ceiling light. The dancers' expressions are focused, framed by the cool, clinical brightness of the venue.
