Cheesemaker Turning Gruyere Wheel at Dawn

Cool gray light washes the wide valley floor near Pointe-Noire before the sun fully rises. A cheesemaker stands silhouetted against the brightening horizon haze, hands gripping a large wheel of Gruyere cheese to turn it over. Sea spray hangs in the still air, catching the low sun rays that strike the distant horizon line. The figure wears heavy work clothing suited for the turn of seasons. Behind them, the valley stretches out in muted tones of slate and soft green. The wheel rests on a wooden stand, its pale rind against the dark shape of the worker. A thin layer of moisture coats the ground where the wind has carved the landscape.
