Checking Time in Beirut
by Evan Thomas
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow Beirut alleyway reveals a baker in a stained white apron leaning against a rusted metal shutter, checking a digital stopwatch clipped to his belt. The scene is anchored by a row of mismatched terracotta plant pots lining the dusty threshold, some holding resilient green cuttings that catch the ambient gray. Beside the baker, a faded red doormat lies scuffed against the concrete, while a stack of clear glass tumblers sits on a nearby plastic crate, reflecting the muted sky. Pigeons gather in the damp shadow of the doorway, pecking at crumbs near the baker’s worn shoes, creating a candid tableau of urban pause and routine.
