Canal Workshop in Venice

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow canal-side workshop reveals its interior through an open shutter. A stone workbench holds a heavy iron vise clamped around a brass fitting, its metal surface dull against the wet air. Beside it, a small terracotta bowl collects water dripping from a leaky pipe above, while a worn woven mat lies crumpled on the floor, damp from the rising tide. In the background, the grey reflection of a passing gondola glides across the dark water, mirroring the muted tones of the alley. A hairline scratch on a polished gold frame leans against the wall, catching the minimal ambient light.
