Maintenance Tools in Venice
by Anthony Reed
Under a flat, diffused overcast sky, a narrow Venetian alleyway is choked with the daily logistics of canal-side living. A rusted metal crate sits precariously on the edge of a moss-slicked stone quay, its contents spilling slightly onto the wet pavement. Leaning against the crate is a worn tool caddy, its plastic compartments stained with years of marine grease and salt spray, hinting at recent repairs to a nearby gondola or water taxi. In the background, the muted grey tones of ancient brickwork fade into the misty haze of the canal, where the water laps silently against the steps. The unglamorous, functional reality of maintenance in a city built on water, devoid of tourist polish.
