Bronze Bell Polishing at Gwangju Dawn
by Suzanne Fry
Pale silver dawn light spills across a damp concrete loading dock near Gwangju, illuminating a massive bronze bell resting on a low metal stand. The bell's surface reflects the soft morning glow, revealing smooth curves and vertical casting lines. Wisps of white vapor rise from the wet ground, swirling around the base of the heavy metal object. A worker's gloved hand holds a polishing tool against the curved bronze, leaving a streak of brighter sheen. The air hangs thick with moisture, coating the rough industrial surroundings in a fine film. Shadows stretch long across the gray pavement, defining the bell's immense scale against the open dock space. The metal gleams where the cloth touches, against the darker, unpolished sections still cooling from the furnace.
