Bookbinder Stitching Pages in Rio Market Hall
by Blake Beach
Warm candlelight spills across a weathered wooden workbench inside a sprawling Rio de Janeiro market hall. A bookbinder sits hunched over an open volume, fingers guiding a thick needle through stacked pages. The wet season air hangs heavy, visible in the sheen of moisture on the concrete floor where muted reflections of the flickering flames stretch like elongated gold ribbons. High above, corrugated metal roofing catches the last dim blue of twilight, against the amber glow below. Dust motes drift in the light beams, settling on stacks of leather and rough paper. The binder's hands move with practiced rhythm, their sleeves rolled up to reveal skin worn by years of labor. A small clay candle holder sits beside the work, its wax pooling in irregular ridges. The floor tiles, slick with recent rain, mirror the chaotic geometry of hanging market stalls and the solitary figure working against the encroaching dark.
