Laundry Drying in Beirut

Mist rests on the limestone façade of a mid-rise apartment block in Achrafieh, softening the sharp angles of the concrete balconies. On a rusted metal railing, a blue plastic laundry basket holds damp white sheets that drip steadily onto the pavement below, their fabric heavy with dawn moisture. One red thread loops loosely beside a small, worn needle case left out to air, the metallic nickel latch on the case catching a faint, diffuse highlight from the gray sky.
