Bamboo Longhouse After Rain in Dominican Village

by Ricky Kirby

Wet bamboo poles stack vertically to form the walls and steep roof of a long structure rising against a pale gray sky. Rainwater beads on the smooth, segmented stalks, dripping from the thatched eaves onto dark, churned clay below. Ferns and broad leaves press close to the building's sides, their surfaces glistening in the soft, diffused light. The low angle frames the woven joints and natural curves of the bamboo against the overcast sky. Dark, wet earth surrounds the foundation, reflecting the muted tones above. Fine mist hangs in the air near the foliage, scattering the light as it falls across the glistening leaves. A drop of water slides down the edge of a thatched shingle, joining the puddles forming at the base of the wall.
