Balcony Kitchen in Izmir
The blue hour settles over a narrow Izmir balcony, where a wrought-iron railing frames a view of the Aegean’s deepening indigo and the distant, glittering outline of Kadifekale. Inside, the space is a cramped, lived-in kitchen corner defined by peeling white enamel walls stained with decades of cooking grease. A faded plastic chair with a slatted back sits angled against the counter, its surface scarred by heat and use. On the laminate countertop, a ceramic bowl holds a few bruised figs, their purple skins against the dull grey surface. Beside it, a heavy metal grater rests near a small glass of tea, the condensation leaving a faint, circular water ring on the table.
