Balcony Workspace in Izmir
by Tobias Ponce
A narrow, sun-bleached balcony in Izmir’s Kemeraltı district bustles with domestic clutter under the harsh winter noon light. A chipped white enamel sink overflows with wet mesh colanders and a wooden mending basket brimming with tangled yarn, sitting beside a rusted work stool used as a makeshift shelf. Potted rosemary and mint spill over the edge of the concrete ledge, their green leaves stark against the peeling ochre stucco of the adjacent building. Below, the chaotic geometry of terracotta roofs and satellite dishes creates a textured backdrop, while a discarded powder puff and a small pin tin rest precariously on a stack of folded laundry, showing the uncurated, layered reality of urban Turkish life in motion.
