Balancing Saucer in Osaka
by Rick Wong
A narrow service alley in Osaka’s Dotonboru district hums with late afternoon activity, framed by the dense verticality of aging concrete and rusted metal. A local worker in a faded blue uniform balances a white ceramic saucer atop a stack of cardboard boxes near a doorway, his handkerchief tucked into his back pocket. Beside him, a red tool caddy sits open on a wooden work stool, revealing wrenches and pliers. The clear sunlight casts sharp, geometric shadows across the wet pavement, highlighting mineral rings left by a leaking pipe above a stone basin. In the background, a rowboat-shaped sign for a nearby restaurant glints against the sky, while a thermometer on the wall reads high.
