Adjusting Tie in Osaka

by Alex Logan

Cool blue morning light falls through the narrow gap between two Osaka apartment buildings, illuminating a narrow concrete stairwell where a retired salaryman in a rumpled grey suit pauses to adjust his tie. He stands beside a small, rusted metal step stool, using it to reach a high window latch that has been stuck since dawn. On the top step rests a chipped ceramic tea kettle, steam still rising faintly into the chill air, while a single, vibrant purple hydrangea blooms defiantly from a crack in the adjacent brick wall, its wet petals catching the diffuse light. The quiet, mechanical rhythm of daily life in a dense urban setting, where domestic clutter meets public transit routines.
