Adjusting Awning in Osaka

by Jolene Cohen

A narrow Osaka alleyway glistens under the flat, cool light of early morning, where a local vendor adjusts a faded red awning above a small tofu shop. The scene is anchored by a cluster of daily necessities: a pair of yellow rain boots rests near the entrance, their rubber surfaces reflecting the damp concrete, while a worn work stool sits slightly askew beside a stack of woven baskets. A pair of hands, calloused and quick, tightens a strap on a wooden crate, the movement blurred just enough to suggest urgency. Nearby, a metal tea infuser spoon hangs from a hook, catching a faint glint of the gray sky, against the rough texture of the brick wall.
