Ammonite Fossil Spiral Chambers Dry Season Calabar
by Zoey Boyd
Pale beige and cream tones dominate the tightly framed fossil, revealing the intricate spiral chambers of an ammonite shell. The dry season air leaves the surrounding soil cracked and dusty, against the smooth, calcified surface of the ancient specimen. Bright midmorning light, diffused by heavy overcast skies, eliminates harsh shadows while highlighting the subtle ridges and growth lines etched into the rock. A metal caliper rests against the shell, its silver jaws open to measure the curvature of the latest chamber. Fine particles of red earth rest on the crevices, anchoring the prehistoric object in the specific geology of the Calabar region. The spiral tightens inward, ending in a small, dark aperture at the center.
