Alley Floor in Osaka

Early morning light spills across the tiled floor of a Dotonbori izakaya back alley, illuminating a stack of white styrofoam delivery boxes waiting for the first rush. A pair of worn rubber geta sandals rests near a wet mop bucket, their wooden clogs stained with river silt and soy sauce. Behind them, a red plastic crate holds bruised tomatoes and bundles of scallions, their green tops against the dull gray concrete. The air is thick with the promise of frying oil and dashi. One yellow caution sign hangs crookedly from a rusted pipe, its bold black text stark against the pale dawn sky.
