A cramped Auckland kitchen sink glows under the harsh, mixed fluorescence of a nearby open fridge and the amber sodium spill from a streetlamp outside. A white enamel pitcher sits askew in the stainless steel basin, its chipped rim catching the cold blue light. Soap residue forms a gritty, translucent ring around the drain, catching the reflection of a wire dish rack piled with drying ceramic mugs. Twine fibers from a recently opened parcel rest on the wet wood of the countertop edge, against the smooth, glossy ceramic tiles of the backsplash.
