Aerial View of Yunnan Coastal Highway at Dawn
by Raul Swain
Soft, diffused light blankets a winding asphalt ribbon cutting through steep green slopes in Yunnan. From directly above, the road hugs the jagged cliff edges, curving sharply around the terrain. Low-hanging clouds drift across the valley floor, partially obscuring the dense forest below and creating a layered effect of mist and foliage. The asphalt appears dark and damp against the vibrant, muted greens of the turn-of-season vegetation. Sparse trees line the roadside, their branches bare or just beginning to bud. The highway remains empty, a solitary gray line separating the solid earth from the soft, white void of the clouds. The texture of the road surface is smooth and uniform, against the rough, uneven canopy of the forest below. A faint shadow falls across the curve of the road, marking the angle of the early morning sun hidden by the overcast sky.
