Aerial View of Indonesian Allotment Gardens
by Leila Boyd
Greenhouse grids stretch across the Indonesian landscape beneath a heavy, overcast sky. From this high vantage point, the patchwork of allotment gardens reveals itself in cartographic clarity, with rows of crops turning the colors of late autumn. Dappled light falls through the canopy above, casting shifting patterns of brightness and shadow across the tilled earth and plastic sheeting. The geometric precision of the plots contrasts with the organic irregularity of the surrounding vegetation. Puddles of water reflect the gray clouds in the depressions between the raised beds. Narrow dirt paths wind through the sections, separating vibrant green patches from fields of dormant brown stalks. The texture of the soil varies from smooth, prepared surfaces to rough, clumpy mounds. A thin layer of mist hovers just above the lowest leaves, softening the edges of the furthest rows.
