Aerial View of Geometric Landfill Cells

by Jill Porter

Cool blue twilight washes over a sprawling landfill site, where geometric cells form sharp, dark rectangles against the earth. High above the West Virginia landscape, diagonal lines of waste containment stretch toward braided river channels winding through the valleys. Ground fog fills the low points, softening the transition between the rigid industrial grid and the organic river paths. The early summer light offers no warmth, only a deep, uniform indigo that flattens the terrain into a pattern of order. Sharp edges of the landfill contrast with the fluid, misty curves of the water below. A thin strip of pale mist rests on the riverbank at the bottom right corner.
