Adjusting Gate in Lisbon

by Jeffery Ortega

Mist rests on the wet cobblestones of a narrow Alfama alley, diffusing the pale gray light of dawn into a soft, uniform glow. A fisherman in a faded yellow slicker stands on the stone steps of a weathered limestone building, his hands gloved in thick, stained leather as he adjusts a heavy iron gate. Beside him, a wooden crate holds a few scattered sardines and a pair of rusted pruning shears, left there from a previous morning's work. The damp air softens the edges of the peeling blue paint on the doorframe, while a single potted herb, a hardy rosemary bush, sits on the windowsill above, its needles glistening with condensation.
