Worker Pausing in Lisbon
by Irene Hahn
Cool morning light washes over a narrow Alfama alley where a municipal worker pauses beside a rusted metal bin. A pair of heavy garden shears rests on the wet cobblestones, their steel blades catching the diffuse gray light, while a sun-bleached canvas sack lies crumpled nearby, stained with damp earth. The worker’s hand, gloved in worn rubber, grips the handle of a wooden rake, adjusting its position against a patch of stubborn ivy clinging to the peeling lime-wash of a terracotta-tiled wall. Above, a single paper lantern hangs from a wrought-iron balcony, its pale paper unlit but vibrant against the deep blue shutters of a closed bakery.
