Serving Customer in Lisbon
by Harold Chung
Rain slicks the cobblestones of a narrow Alfama alley, reflecting the warm, yellow glow from a ground-floor bakery window. Inside, a baker in a flour-dusted apron slides a tray of fresh pastries onto a counter, the steam rising against the cool, damp air visible through the glass. A customer in a dark raincoat stands just outside, holding a plastic bag, their reflection merging with the baker’s movement. The wet street amplifies the neon sign above, casting pink and blue streaks across the puddles. A discarded newspaper lies near the curb, its ink bleeding slightly in the drizzle. The quiet rhythm of evening commerce, where the warmth of the interior contrasts sharply with the grey, wet dusk outside.
