Serving Sardines in Lisbon
A narrow Alfama alleyway glistens under the heavy, gray wash of dusk rain, the wet calçada pavement reflecting the warm, amber spill from a nearby pastel-colored façade. A local vendor in a yellow slicker stands behind a wooden cart, steam rising from a large metal mixing bowl as he serves grilled sardines to a customer holding a translucent orange umbrella. The vendor’s hands move quickly, using a rough bath sponge to wipe down the counter between customers, while a small, wet dog shakes off water near the cart’s base, sending droplets onto the cobblestones. Above, tangled laundry lines crisscross the alley, dripping steadily, framing the intimate, steamy transaction against the cool, blue-toned rain of the evening.
