Carrying Pastries in Lisbon

by Juan Tucker

Rain-slicked cobblestones in the Alfama district reflect the pale, diffused morning light, creating a mirror-like sheen on the uneven stone. A narrow alleyway opens onto a small, tiled courtyard where a local baker, wrapped in a damp apron, carries a wooden crate of warm pastries past a weathered blue door. The door features a brass handle and a nickel latch that catches the weak sunlight, gleaming against the dark, wood-grain darkened by use. Beside the entrance, a simple metal stool sits overturned, waiting for the day’s first customers.
