Arranging Sardines in Lisbon
by Annette Dyer
Mist rests on the steep, wet cobblestones of a Lisbon alley as a fishmonger arranges silver sardines on a slanted wooden counter near a peeling blue azulejo wall. A striped towel hangs loosely from a hook above, its fabric damp and heavy, while a hammered copper basin catches the diffuse, gray dawn light reflecting off the slick stones. The scene is grounded by the rough texture of the granite steps leading up to a closed shutter, against the smooth, cold skin of the fresh catch. One sardine slides off the edge, suspended in motion before it splashes into a puddle of reflected sky.
