Cold silver dawn light pools across the glassy surface of a remote ferry crossing near Caracas. A wooden canoe rests motionless, its hull mirrored perfectly in the mirror-still water below. Fresh rain leaves glistening droplets on the gunwales and darkens the planks. Converging lines of the ferry dock stretch toward a distant vanishing point where the sky begins to lighten. Rain-slicked wood contrasts with the dark water. One patch of bright blue sky breaks through the gray clouds above the tree line, reflecting sharply against the dark wood of the boat.
