Pigeons Huddled in Berlin
by Eva Noble
Rain streaks blur the glass of a corner bakery window in Kreuzberg, where the warm interior glow spills onto the wet pavement outside. Inside, a baker’s hands rest near a flour-dusted counter, a single wrinkled linen napkin bunched beside a ceramic bread basket holding dark rye loaves. Outside, two pigeons huddle under the narrow awning, their grey feathers slick with moisture, watching the street. A paper lantern hangs just behind the glass, its soft yellow light reflecting in the puddles, while the cool blue dusk settles over the brick facade. The quiet tension between the sheltered warmth of the shop and the damp chill of the evening street.
